Chris Morgan, the directly elected Conservative mayor, has tabled plans to put an additional 250,000 of revenue into the borough's youth service.
A decision on the proposal is due within the next week. The move follows criticism by Morgan of the borough's Labour administration for the way the service had been run down.
An Ofsted inspection in early 2001 praised North Tyneside youth service for achieving much from a low level of resources. Its annual spending then of 651,649 represented just 38.43 for every 13 to 19-year-old in the area.
But the inspectors pointed out that a high percentage of the youth work was unsatisfactory and that without a properly resourced infrastructure, the service's current levels of achievement were not sustainable.
