Purpose-built Youth Village opens in North Tyneside

North Tyneside Council has opened its Youth Village, which brings together youth support services in a purpose built facility.

The £2.2m "village" houses North Tyneside Council's Youth Offending Service, the Never Too Late (N2L) substance misuse team, the Leaving Care team, Prevention Services, the Children's Participation Team, Northumbria Youth Action and partners from Northumbria Police and North Tyneside Primary Care Trust.

Youth training charity the Northumbria Youth Action team has been in residence since the first phase of the village was completed in 2006.

The new building includes meeting areas for young people, an ICT suite, interview rooms, office accommodation, laundry facilities for service users, games and relaxation areas and kitchen areas where young people can learn essential life skills.

North Tyneside mayor John Harrison said: "Housing these essential services together under one roof will enable us to truly enhance the way we work with and for our young people."

Funding for the Youth Village came form organisations including North Tyneside Council, the Youth Justice Board, North Tyneside Primary Care Trust and One North East.
