Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Richard Allen, director of theParenting Fund, National Family and Parenting Institute

1 min read
What do you do? I manage the Parenting Fund on behalf of the Department for Education and Skills.

The fund is a 30m programme over four years for voluntary sectororganisations working around parenting support, particularly forhard-to-reach families. I manage the fund's processes. The fundingdecisions are made by an independent grant panel.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Hearing people say thatwithout the fund they wouldn't have been able to do the work they do. Ican think of a couple of projects working with young fathers thatwouldn't have happened if the Parenting Fund wasn't there.

What is the hardest aspect of your job? When I have to decide to reducefunding because a project won't achieve all it set out to do anddeciding what projects not to fund. In our second and final round offunding we had 120m worth of applications but only 14mavailable.
