Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Amanda Oba, play co-ordinator,London Borough of Camden

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I manage Camden council play service's team that provides children aged four to 12 living in temporary accommodation with access to play opportunities.

This involves outreach work in hotels and hostels, mainly with refugeeand asylum-seeking families, to identify children who could be supportedby the service. The children, who are living in crowded conditions, aregiven the opportunity to make new friends and get out in outdoor spacesby taking part in the sports, games, drama, arts and crafts, andhomework clubs that the play service offers.

Describe a typical day. During the summer holidays I spend from 10.30 to5.30 Monday to Friday with the mobile team, picking up children fromhostels or hotels and taking them out for activities such as sports andgames, going to the theatre and the park. I also work with other familymembers, to give them support and involve them in activities such aspicnics, fruit picking or a day trip to the seaside, which they maynever have experienced before.
