Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Jennifer Glass, out of school co-ordinator, National Autistic Society, Scotland, Dundee

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I manage the Stepping Stones after-school club in Dundee. I am also the facilitator of the adult Asperger syndrome social group, and take overall responsibility for the eight to 12 and 12 to 18 age groups we run within Dundee.

Describe a typical day. I work Monday to Friday, 1pm to 7pm. Most of this time is spent running the after-school club, ensuring children, staff and parents are happy with the service. Every second Thursday we go out on a social group event.

What other agencies, and who else within your own organisation, do you work with? I work with the local schools that the children attend, colleges where we assist students, local agencies and inclusion groups from the voluntary sector, such as Barnardo's, and social work representatives who require respite care for their clients.

How did you end up in the job?

I was a nursery nurse for 10 years and for the last four years have helped set up and co-ordinate a holiday play scheme for children on the autistic spectrum.

What qualifications do you need?

You need a childcare qualification and experience with children on the autistic spectrum.

What are the main goals that you have set for yourself?

To secure funding for much required out-of-school provision within Dundee that currently relies solely on grants and fundraising ventures.

What's the biggest challenge?

I know of at least 80 families within Dundee that have a child on the autistic spectrum and believe that if I can provide all these children with some form of provision, then I will be able to show the need for statutory funding.

What advice do you have for others wanting to do this kind of work?

Sometimes it feels like the work is never-ending and that no-one cares. If anyone wants to do it they should start as a volunteer to gain experience. It's a fantastic, rewarding job but it isn't right for everyone.
