Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Monika Davis, English co-ordinator at the Sybil Elgar School, Essex

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I teach Key Stage 4 English to children with autism and additional learning difficulties and challenging behaviour.

We follow the national curriculum so I make sure this is accessible for them.

It's sometimes said that teaching children with autism is a bit like being a detective. I try to get to the bottom of their behaviour to help them understand the world around them. Some of the children do not feel the need to communicate with others at all - we try to help them express their needs and preferences.

Describe a typical day. I start by organising the day for my six Year 8 students. Children with autism like predictability, so I tell them what will be happening during the day and for how long. I then start teaching.
