What exactly do you do? I am a classroom teacher and dance instructor at Sybil Elgar School, which was opened by The National Autistic Society in 1965. From its early beginnings of nine students in one building, it now has the facility to take up to 72 pupils as day, weekly or termly boarders. The curriculum is geared specifically to the needs of people with autism, with an emphasis on communication and social skills.

Describe a typical day?

The day at school begins by going through the timetable with the students and discussing the weather and tasks for the morning break. Then lessons begin. Usually I take either an aerobics or dance class until 10.20am when there is snack time for the students. After playtime there will follow another dance session, then lunch. In the afternoon I will either be involved in a class activity such as swimming, cooking or a trip to the park. If not I will be attending to my paperwork and student records. At 3.40pm the children leave and there is time set aside for staff meetings.
