Poor levels of literacy among foster and residential carers are hampering efforts to encourage looked-after children to read.

The evaluation of Reading Rich, a Scottish Book Trust and NCH Scotland scheme aimed at children in care, found that some carers were reluctant to take part because of their own limited communication and literacy skills.

Carers' insecurity over their own reading ability contributed to low involvement. The study found that just 74 children took part in the reading initiative between 2004 and 2007. Many carers were found to have little knowledge of the most age-appropriate books for children in their care.

The evaluation recommends that future schemes offer carers access to support and training in literacy. It also recommends that more should be done among carers to promote the importance of reading.
