An Ofsted evaluation of student reading skills has called for immediate action after revealing that many pupils are being let down by the system.

Schools, local authorities and the Government must take urgent action to improve children's reading skills, according to a report from Ofsted that claims the system continues to let down a "stubborn core" of pupils.

Ofsted's evaluation, Reading for purpose and pleasure, highlights variation in performance between primary schools in similar socio-economic circumstances, even though reading standards have risen significantly since the introduction of the National Literacy Strategy in 1997.

In schools classed as ineffective, with a third of pupils failing to reach expected standards of reading, Ofsted says there has been little real progress in improving reading. Standards were declining rather than improving in some of these schools and in many of them more than 30 per cent of pupils regularly failed to achieve expected reading levels.
