Looked-after children's basic literary skills, knowledge and social skills are all affected positively by reading regularly, but getting them to read in the first place is the real challenge, according to a report from the Scottish Government on its Reading Rich programme.
The research was intended to identify and evaluate the benefits of the initiative, which is aimed at children in residential and foster care settings in Scotland. The programme, delivered by NCH Scotland and the Scottish Book Trust, ran from 2004 to 2007 through seven different projects in a range of care settings.
The programme attracted only 74 participants during its three years because frequently changing care placements resulted in difficulties in recruiting and maintaining anticipated numbers of young people. However, as the programme was largely based on changes in attitude, there were still plenty of positive outcomes in the key findings.
