Government and councils are being urged to do more to encourage kinship care as an alternative to foster placements.
A study by Research In Practice has found children do at least as well in kinship care compared to non-kinship foster placements. In many cases kinship care, where relatives look after a child, was even found to have distinct advantages over foster care. This includes providing a more stable setting for children through better access to birth parents and other family members. Children's sense of identity and positive self-image are also enhanced in kinship arrangements, with evidence analysed for the study showing that "kinship can also provide the best cultural placement for children".
