Knowledge among voluntary groups and charities involved in children's services about social enterprise is limited and beset with misconceptions.

Despite the government's eagerness to see more charities become social enterprises, a survey of 14 groups carried out by Department for Children, Schools and Families-funded group VCS Engage, found some had either little knowledge about social enterprise or little understanding of how it can benefit them.

A common theme to emerge from the survey was a misconception that to adopt a social enterprise model a charity or voluntary group needs to change its structure.

Charities also had negative feelings about making a profit and while most of those surveyed can identify with aspects of social enterprise such as "opening coffee shops or selling training or consultancy", there was little concept of ideals of "financial independence, business focus and sustainability," says the report.
