Have you sat through an entire meeting and wondered what your colleagues are rambling on about? Use our handy jargon guide to find out what they mean.

Prime pumping

Where you might hear it: From anyone interested in grants or funding

What does it mean: Prime pumping, or pump priming, is funding intended to fuel economic development. The phrase is usually used to describe a situation when the government invests cash into an organisation or a sector to try and jump-start sustainable growth, though the private sector also uses the term.

The expression originated in the US where pump priming was used to help revitalise the economy following a recession. It derives from a saying about old-fashioned pumps, which needed to be primed with water before they could function properly.

How to use it: Find out which government funding streams are considered to be prime pumping. Ask your manager if there are any government funds available in your area to help to start projects.
