Phrase: Commissioning
Where you might hear it: Anywhere and everywhere. GPs commission health services, local authorities commission social care providers and children's trusts commission a range of resources.
What does it mean: To commission is simply to buy services. Organisations commission other organisations to do the jobs they can't. In children's services, joint planning and commissioning is used to provide a full package of support to children and parents. For example, child and adolescent mental health services, youth offending teams and schools will be jointly commissioned, enabling them to work together.
How to use it: Ask if you can get involved with "commissioning" services where you work. Check "commissioning" is effective and vet your service providers.
