Education otherwise
Where you might hear it: From anyone in education.
What does it mean: Education otherwise is a term used to describe the education of children who are not in the mainstream schooling system. Although the phrase is often used to refer to elective home education, it can also be used to describe alternative education provision in settings such as pupil referral units, secure training centres or hospital schools. The phrase derives from terminology used in the Education Act 1996, which places a duty on parents to provide their children with a suitable education, either at school or "otherwise".
How to use it: Find out how many forms of education otherwise are available in your local authority. Speak to a home educator about their experiences.
