PRU - pupil referral unit
Where you might hear it: From anyone in the education sector.
What does it mean: PRUs are an alternative to mainstream education for pupils of compulsory school age. The units are for children who cannot attend school for a variety of reasons. Groups of pupils who could attend PRUs include those who have been permanently excluded from school, pregnant schoolgirls and school-aged mothers, pupils unable to attend school for medical reasons and asylum seekers or refugees who have no school place. In addition to offering full- and part-time education, PRUs often operate outreach programmes to support vulnerable children within mainstream schools.
