DIFFERENTIATION

Where you might hear it: From anyone in education, but especially in relation to gifted children or those with special educational needs.

What does it mean: Differentiation is a process that gives all school pupils access to learning that is tailored to their specific needs. It means that a teacher has to be able to vary their approach as necessary, adapting their lesson plans to maximise learning. This could mean placing children of similar abilities in groups, or using a variety of techniques to teach one idea. Differentiation helps to meet the needs of gifted or talented children and children with special educational needs.
