ADHD
Where you might hear it: When talking about children with special needs.
What does it mean: ADHD stands for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. It is a behavioural disorder characterised by persistent lack of attention and hyperactivity. Symptoms include constant fidgeting and restlessness. It is believed to affect up to nine per cent of schoolchildren and is the most common behavioural disorder in the UK. The behaviours associated with ADHD are common in most children, but for a child to be diagnosed with the disorder the behaviours must be so extreme that they impair their social and academic functioning.
How to use it: Get in touch with a local ADHD support group and check out its services. Find out about how children with ADHD are medicated.
