Work Wise: Jargon buster

Have you sat through an entire meeting and wondered what your colleagues are rambling on about? Use our handy jargon guide to find out what they mean.

CME

Where you might hear it: In an educational meeting.

What does it mean: CME stands for children missing education. The term refers to children of compulsory school age who are not on a school register, or being educated in an alternative to school. To be classed as "missing education" a child normally has to be absent for four weeks or more. Local authorities have been legally required to make arrangements to identify children missing education in their localities since February 2007 as part of government efforts to reduce CME numbers.

How to use it: Check out the government's statutory guidance on CME for local authorities. Find out what schools in your local area are doing to re-engage children at risk of, or already missing education.
