Ofqual

Where you might hear it: From anyone working in education.

What does it mean: Ofqual stands for Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator. Launched in April this year, the independent regulatory body sets standards for qualifications and exams in England. Its work includes monitoring the different exam awarding bodies and making sure schools charge the correct exam fees. Although Ofqual currently operates as an independent arm of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, legislation due to be passed in this parliamentary session will make it a separate statutory authority that reports to Parliament. Ofqual is currently conducting an inquiry into the problems that dogged the marking of this year's SATs.
