PRU - pupil referral unit

Where you might hear it: From anyone in the education sector.

What does it mean: PRUs are an alternative to mainstream education forpupils of compulsory school age. The units are for children who cannotattend school for a variety of reasons. Groups of pupils who couldattend PRUs include those who have been permanently excluded fromschool, pregnant schoolgirls and school-aged mothers, pupils unable toattend school for medical reasons and asylum seekers or refugees whohave no school place. In addition to offering full- and part-timeeducation, PRUs often operate outreach programmes to support vulnerablechildren within mainstream schools.
