Phrase: Education Action Zones (EAZs)
Where you might hear it: Anyone involved in education might refer to EAZs, but teachers are most likely to use the phrase.
What it means: Education Action Zones were formed to support schools in deprived areas in the early days of the New Labour government. No longer part of central government policy, each zone contains 10 to 25 schools and is managed by an "action forum" made up of school and community representatives. Raising standards is top of the agenda for any zone, and they aim to do this by creating partnerships with business and community groups that provide them with around a quarter of their additional funding per year.
