Organisation: Southampton Youth Service - Freemantle Lake Park Issue: Things to do and a place to go - creating a youth shelter
The situation: A group of young people contacted the local youth worker about getting a new shelter built. The Youth Forum was set up and met each month for the 18 months the project took to complete. Young people took part in every aspect of planning and played a key role in getting the proposals accepted by local residents.
What children and young people said: The group worked with the artist on the pavilion design: "I chose the shape", "I chose the colour". Four Youth Forum group members presented to the council planning meeting and the committee passed the application by four votes to one.
