Organisation: Bracknell Forest Council - Sandhurst Bus Project
Issue: Raising awareness of sexual health issues among young Travellers
The situation: Bracknell Forest detached youth work team took the info-active bus to Sandhurst to work closely with young Travellers and encourage them to be healthy and explore sexual health issues. The young people began to engage in a series of frank discussions that explored their sexual behaviour and the consequences of such activity.
What children and young people said: "It's easy to get information (about safe sex and contraception) and talk to people because the bus comes to us so we don't have to go to them." (Mandy, 15)
What's changed: A number of young people involved in the project visited the clinics for STI tests, which they reported they would never have considered before.
Young people increased their awareness of contraception, particularly the condom, and young females reported that they were more confident about the importance of safe sex and their right to say "no".
Every Child Matters outcomes: Making a positive contribution; being healthy.
