The National Youth Agency: What's changed

1 min read
What's Changed is a tool for groups to record the outcomes of participation by young people. Every other week we summarise an example of how young people have brought about change.

Organisation: The Just 4 Girls Group (J4G)

Issue: The opportunity to take part in non-traditional sporting activities

The situation: The J4G group provides a female-only environment that allows young women to overcome cultural barriers that may prevent them from attending other leisure activities. Group members formed a forum so that they could develop its activities. Specifically, they wanted to take part in indoor climbing activities and trampolining.

What children and young people said

"We want to do what others can do, but in a female-only session. Why can't we have a go at climbing like our friends?" ... "I go on the climbing wall as often as possible."

What's changed The J4G group applied for a "Here to HELP" award to support the girls' forum. The group has been able to hire female climbing instructors, enabling the J4G group to attend indoor climbing sessions. Trampolining has also been offered as a result of the forum's request. The forum members are able to meet during the J4G sessions and receive accreditation for their work. The forum is continuing to develop the activities on offer, and the J4G group is now developing netball and kayaking sessions.
