Getting children and young people interested in maths can be hard at the best of times. But Wirral Council uses a special Letterbox Club to engage its children in care.

It's just one of the initiatives behind a huge improvement in Key Stage 2 maths results for looked-after children. In 2005, just 32 per cent reached Level 4, but by 2008, 62 per cent of children in care achieved this grade - significantly above the national average of 44 per cent. Children in care become members of the Letterbox Club and receive a package every month for six months.
