Council St Helens
Performance Percentage of looked-after children achieving Level 4 in English and Maths at Key Stage 2
Historically, the educational outcomes of looked-after children in England lag behind the wider school population. While the national average for children reaching Level 4 in English and Maths at Key Stage 2 is 80 per cent and 79 per cent respectively, the figure for looked-after children stands at just 46 per cent.
St Helens has made a concerted effort to narrow the gap for this vulnerable group of children. In the year ending 31 March 2006, 36 per cent of children in care were achieving Level 4 in English and 42 per cent in Maths. Latest figures show an improvement with 64 per cent now reaching the target grade in English and 71 per cent in maths.
