Performance Percentage of looked-after children reaching Level 4 in maths at Key Stage 2
The percentage of looked-after children in Manchester reaching Level 4 in maths at Key Stage 2 was 67 per cent in the year ending March 2009, soaring above the national average for this cohort, which stands at 46 per cent.
Elaine Morrison, strategic lead for the education of looked-after children at the council, thinks targeting children's English skills directly affects students' outcomes in maths.
"That wonderful empowerment when you get children reading, when they feel like they are conquering something and aren't bottom of the pile, helps to develop their confidence," she says.
