Council: East Riding of Yorkshire
Performance: The percentage of former care leavers aged 19 in education, employment or training
2005 55% East Riding of Yorkshire 55.4% England average
2006 69.2% East Riding of Yorkshire 59.1% England average
2007 73.3% East Riding of Yorkshire 63.4% England average
2008 75% East Riding of Yorkshire 64.9% England average
Between 2005 and 2008, East Riding of Yorkshire has steadily improved on the percentage of its care leavers securing education, employment or training. With latest national government figures showing another rise in young people not in education, employment or training, this is a worthy accomplishment.
In 2005, the council was just falling short of the national average, with 55 per cent of its 19-year-olds in education or employment. But after a concerted effort this figure has risen to 75 per cent - 10 per cent above the average. Sue Smyth, the council's pathways team manager, says: "Since 2005 we have definitely improved joint working between ourselves and the Connexions service."
