Council Slough
Performance The percentage of 19-year-old care leavers in education, employment or training. Years ending 31 March
In 2007, Slough Borough Council was lagging behind the national average in terms of outcomes for care leavers.
Just 40 per cent of 19-year-old care leavers were in education, employment or training at the end of March 2007 compared with the 62.6 per cent England average. But by March 2010 this had risen to 86.4 per cent.
Slough's sharp improvement can be attributed to a range of initiatives according to Clair Pyper, the council's director of children's services.
The Pathways education team has an education support worker dedicated to care leavers. "They work with colleges to ensure that young people do not drop out of education," Pyper explains. "The education support worker or Pathways personal adviser support young people in applying for college places, accompany them to college interviews and assist them in applying for education maintenance allowance."
