A surprisingly large number of adults say the right age for young people to meet friends unsupervised by adults is 14. Invite young people's responses. How realistic or reasonable is that view? What age do young people think is right?

There is evidence that two-thirds of eight- to 10-year-olds have never been to a park or shop alone. Talk about what such children miss out on. Does it make them different from other young people when they are older?

Media commentators sometimes suggest that all young people are driven round in 4x4s and never out of adult sight. Is this young people's experience? Does it vary for different young people?
