The Day After Tomorrow opens in cinemas this week showing devastation as the worst predictions of climatologists hit home. The film shows the developed world in chaos as major cities are hit by tornadoes, hailstorms and sweltering heat, fluctuating with freezing temperatures on the same day.

The issue at the heart of the film is the disruption we are causing to world weather patterns by our use of energy and emissions of carbon dioxide.

Talk to young people about the greenhouse effect and global warming. How serious do they think the threat is?

Governments around the world have accepted that climate change is caused by burning oil, gas and coal. Many have signed a treaty - the Kyoto Protocol - to try to reduce consumption of these fossil fuels.
