Charlotte Shaw was in a team of 10 teenagers training for the Ten Tors Challenge. She was one of 20 people rescued after strong winds and heavy rain created appalling conditions on the exposed Devon moor.

After her death was reported, the press speculated about whether the challenge event should be cancelled. Was that young people's response? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of cancellation.

Risk assessment is key to safety with outdoor activities. But when a tragic accident happens, does it necessarily mean something went wrong? Talk to young people about acceptance of risk.

The Institute for Outdoor Learning says there are far more deaths through road traffic accidents, or even hazardous activities like solvent abuse, than through outdoor adventures. Discuss why such rare tragedies get more media attention.
