Resources: Talking point - What are the reasons behind suicide?

1 min read

Lee Walker, James Topley and Wayne Browne were all classmates at Craigavon Senior High School in Portadown, Northern Ireland. Each was found hanged in the past month. So far no-one has been able to determine why they took their own lives.

Discuss why some young people commit suicide. Talk about factors such as pressure at school, bullying, low self-esteem, body image, drugs and abuse. Ask the group to suggest where they could turn for advice if they had suicidal thoughts. Draw up a list of the advice services that are available.

The media have speculated that the young men might have formed a suicide pact. Discuss why they might have entered into such agreements. Establish whether young people think it is wise to make such promises.
