'Tis the season to be merry. But does alcohol really make people merry? Talk about the not-so-merry downsides to alcohol consumption. Drinking is involved in many accidents and acts of violence. Ninety-nine per cent of doctors in accident and emergency units say they or their staff have been victims of physical or verbal abuse from drunken patients. And some 92 per cent of police have been attacked by drunks. Talk about city centres on Friday and Saturday nights near Christmas. Would young people feel secure there? What are the major problems?
