More than 4,000 young people were surveyed. Most were unimpressed with celebrities. Asked to name the three most important world figures, living or dead, only 2.6 per cent mentioned David Beckham. Top of the list was Martin Luther King, followed by George W Bush. Nelson Mandela and Tony Blair tied in third place. Invite young people to draw up their own list. What makes someone an important world figure?

Ask young people what three things concern them most about the world.

Those replying to the survey said war and conflict were most significant.

Poverty came fourth in their list, after health and environment. Is this surprising?
