Participation: Youth council plans toolkits for young

1 min read
The British Youth Council is compiling resources for young people to help them get involved in decision-making within organisations.

The work follows research conducted by the council at the end of last year on young people's involvement in governance, which included a survey of 500 organisations. The council also consulted young people on their understanding of governance and on what they felt they needed to make their involvement easier.

Jules Mason, the council's head of citizenship and development, said: "Where organisations involve young people, it's predominantly just below the formal governance level."

The council has now embarked on a piece of work with a group of young people to produce youth-friendly toolkits. The project is part of Youth at the Table, a programme of work conducted by the council as part of Participation Works, an online gateway developed by a consortium of charities funded by the Department for Education and Skills.

The resources are due for completion within six months. The next stage is developing a training programme for young people.
