CYP Now has teamed up with the Churchill Fellowship to publish a series of articles summarising key findings from studies undertaken worldwide by Churchill Fellows (see box). This is an abridged version of Empowering Young People to Become Active Citizens, by Marc Cairns, managing director at New Practice (formerly Pidgin Perfect), a creative consultancy working internationally on creative events, development programmes and placemaking projects.

During the summer of 2016, he undertook an intensive four-week trip across Albania, Serbia, Kosovo, Turkey and Azerbaijan, where he researched ways in which a wide variety of creative events, development programmes and placemaking projects were working to build more resilient communities through youth engagement initiatives that promote active citizenship and participation. In this article, Marc focuses on his travels in Azerbaijan.
