On the ground: Down at My Club - Kilburn Youth Centre, north-west London

Youth Work
George Allawi, 18, Kilburn Youth Centre, north-west London.

I used to come here when I was younger for sessions as well as counselling and advice. I wanted to know how it worked so in late 2006 I applied for a position as a shadow youth worker.

Since then I have been working towards becoming a qualified youth worker and I'm doing an NVQ2 in Introductory Studies in Informal and Community Education.

My job involves running sessions and working in different areas. In some sessions, we focus on a particular topic, like Black History Month. We also organise parties and trips. Recently we have been ice-skating and visited Thorpe Park.

We work with young people aged 13 to 26 and divert them from getting in with the wrong crowd. At the moment we are organising a cultural day, so everyone can experience different cultures from around the world.
