Minimum enrolment levels for schools in Northern Ireland were recommended in a major review published this week.

A review of the province's education system by Professor George Bainsaid action must be taken to deal with the problem of schools having toofew children.

With rising numbers of empty school places, the review recommendssetting minimum enrolment levels. Bain said the argument for cuttingdown the schools' estate was not primarily about saving money but "aboutgiving the children of Northern Ireland an excellent education that willbenefit both them and the society in which they live".

The Strategic Review of Education, which contains 61 recommendations forGovernment, was drawn up after consultation across the educationsector.
