Northern Ireland: Vulnerable children are not integrated

Vulnerable children will not receive an integrated service under current proposals to shake-up public administration in Northern Ireland, campaigners warned last week.

Pauline Leeson, director of Children in Northern Ireland, gave thewarning as the consultation on the province's Review of PublicAdministration came to an end. She said councils needed to take overresponsibility for children's services from both the education andlibrary boards and the health and social services trusts.

These regional bodies needed to feed into local council plans, she said, warning the current system left vulnerable children in silos.

Northern Ireland's commissioner for children and young people, NigelWilliams, said the review was an opportunity for young people to begiven an active role in structures.
