The quality of children's social services in Northern Ireland came underfire last week. An in-depth report by the province's Social ServicesInspectorate identified numerous areas for improvement and warned of"major deficiencies" in how services operate (Children Now, 17-23January).
In fact, the researchers behind the report found evidence of repeatedfailures by services to intervene in child protection cases, leavingchildren at risk.
As a result the report, Our Children and Young People - Our SharedResponsibility, called for changes in how children are protected fromharm in the province. A uniform approach to assessing risks,higher-quality staff support and more effective co-ordination ofrelevant agencies were among the numerous changes demanded.
