Northern Ireland: Budget pressures on Children's Fund

The ending of funding to four Children's Fund projects in Northern Ireland has cast doubt on government promises to minimise damage caused by the dissolving of the fund in its 2005-08 budget plans.

Nigel Williams, the province's children's commissioner, said he had been encouraged by a meeting last week where the Northern Ireland Office had promised to investigate the possibility of mainstreaming Children's Fund projects.

But Pauline Leeson, director of voluntary sector group Children in Northern Ireland, said four projects had been told their budgets would not be renewed, and staff at one had received their redundancy notices.
