The expansion is backed by 1.8m from the 100m Children andYoung People Fund and will see more counselling services made availableto children in every post-primary school in Northern Ireland.
The Department of Education intends to group the province's schools intoeight regions and strike regional-level deals with organisations to runthe service. Youth counsellors will support children on whateversubjects concern them including bereavement and bullying. As well asproviding services, the 1.8m will be used to train would-becounsellors.
The money is in addition to the existing 420,000 a year given toeducation and library boards to run youth counselling services. However,the education and library board grants are set to end in next year.
