NCB NOW: Young people in care want time to talk

1 min read
Young people in public care want stronger relationships with their social workers, with greater continuity and more time to talk and listen, according to a new report on improving the care system.

Nearly 400 children and young people with experience of care were consulted as part of the Blueprint project, carried out by Voice for the Child in Care (VCC) and NCB's Children's Residential Care Unit.

"I hate having to retell my story every time I get a new social worker - it really upsets me," said one young person, while another commented: "I'd like to see a system where they don't treat us as if we were criminals or babies."

The report, Start with the child, stay with the child, which was launched at a national conference on 19 February, includes recommendations for improving the care system aimed at managers, practitioners and policymakers.
