NCB Now: Research shows encouragement helps children in care to achieve

1 min read
Young people in public care say that encouragement from their carers, teachers and social workers is the most important factor in their educational progress, according to new research published by NCB.

"When I've done well, my foster carer is really proud," commented one 12-year-old. "That makes me want to keep doing my best."

The research has been published in the report, Taking Care of Education: An evaluation of the education of looked after children, by Rachael Harker, David Dobel-Ober, David Berridge and Ruth Sinclair. It will be launched at a national conference in London on 31 March.

The report follows a three-year project funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation. NCB evaluated the work in three local authorities to develop policy and practice to improve educational outcomes for children and young people in public care.
