NCB Now: Improve wellbeing in secure care

1 min read
Young people living in secure care are likely to have low self-esteem, poor mental health and limited coping strategies. How can those working with them improve their emotional health?

A new publication from NCB aims to help trainers support staff in secure children's homes develop the skills they need.

Improving the Emotional Health and Well-being of Young People in Secure Care, by Julia Bird and Lynne Gerlach, contains training exercises and briefing papers on topics, from developing emotional resilience to sexual health.

"Many of those who work with young people in secure care recognise how vulnerable they are, but do not always feel confident about what to do," said Gill Frances, director of children's development at NCB, who commissioned the training resource.

"This publication draws on best practice as part of the Healthy Care programme."
