NCB Now: Guides help children in care have a say

1 min read
Two new guides published by NCB aim to help looked-after children have a say in the decisions that affect their lives.

My Turn To Talk, by Claire Lanyon and Ruth Sinclair, is available in two versions: one for children aged 11 or younger, the other for young people aged 12 plus.

The guides, funded by the Social Education Trust, will help children and young people in care to participate meaningfully and actively throughout the process of assessment, planning and review of the care that they receive.

They explain the different stages of the care planning process and the roles of particular professionals, highlighting various ways in which children can make their views and wishes heard: for example, at review meetings.

Over 200 looked-after children and young people were consulted in drafting the guides, including advising on the final text, style and design. They were asked how they felt about participating in the decision-making process.
