NCB Now: Young people have their say on violence

"I don't think violence gets you respect. It just makes some people scared of you, and fear and respect are two totally different things." This comment, from Crystal, 16, is one of a range of young people's views about violence expressed in a new book published by NCB.

From fear to respect, by Sue Sharpe, looks at young people's views on violence in the family and the community as well as exploring issues such as bullying and fighting.

Using young people's own words it offers practitioners an insight into their understanding of violence and the significance it has in their lives.

"Violence and safety are complex issues which affect the lives of children and young people," commented Simon Blake, assistant director of NCB's Children's Development Department. "We must listen to young people if we are to achieve our goal of offering safe and positive environments in which they can flourish."
