The young person's guide provides pupils with advice on issues such as what their school should be doing to help them stay in touch with family members. It also looks at what can be done if schools do not keep to the rules.
Jonathan Stanley, senior development officer at the unit, said: "We hope this project has created a template for disseminating information to young people as inclusively as possible."
Copies of the guides will be distributed to all DfES-listed residential special schools. The series will be available in a number of formats including an accessible website, Braille and audio.
- The guides are available from NCB book sales at www.ncb-books.org.uk or tel: 020 7843 6029. A text version of the guides is available at www.rights4me.org.uk
